All about the TENS Machine

01

What is TENS?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) works by passing mild electrical impulses through the skin, via electrode pads, into the nerve fibres which lie below. The TENS impulses help your body produce its own pain killing chemicals, such as endorphins. The level of pain relief obtained varies from person to person.

03

Natural Pain Relief

These impulses also encourage your body to release endorphins and enkephalins, yournatural chemicals, that reduce pain. It is a safe drug-free method of pain relief that has no side effects for mum or baby. Having effective pain relief will help you to stay at home as long as possible in labour. The Tens machine can be used right up to giving birth.

*Some people may need additional pain relief during labour*

Blocking Pain Signals

Blocking Pain Signals: The Elle TENS is attached to electrode pads which are placed on your lower back, directly on the skin. The electrodes emit a harmless flood of electrical impulses to the nerves. Your brain can only process so much information at once, so your brain reduces the number of signals it will process, which in turn reduces the level of pain you consciously feel.
